NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is designed to study broad areas of sky in detail. Its surveys will help researchers investigate dark energy, exoplanets, and the universe's large-scale structure.

A wider view of the sky

Roman's surveys will let astronomers study populations of stars and galaxies. Those observations can help researchers examine patterns that are difficult to see when looking at selected targets individually.

The mission also includes a technology demonstration for directly imaging planets around nearby stars. Testing the instrument in space will show how well it can suppress starlight and reveal much fainter objects nearby.

Ames' contribution

In its August 25, 2026 briefing, NASA described Ames' work on software to improve images and observing plans. The center also contributes expertise in data processing and ground operations.

That briefing listed an August 30, 2026 launch date. It is a record of the schedule announced then; readers seeking the mission's current status should check NASA's Roman mission page.
