Correction, October 18, 2026: Our earlier article claimed that an Autopilot Agent ran entire companies and had taken over operations at 12,000 businesses. We did not have evidence for those claims and have withdrawn them.

Microsoft's Copilot Studio guidance describes autonomous agents that can act without waiting for a user prompt. It also recommends human oversight for critical actions.

Define the job before enabling it

Start with a task whose inputs and permitted actions are clear. Decide which decisions need approval and who will review the result. Keep a way to stop the workflow when it behaves unexpectedly.

An agent's ability to respond to a trigger does not establish that it can safely handle a company's payroll, hiring, or contracts. Evaluate the specific workflow against Microsoft's documented capabilities and the controls your organization requires.
